Upfest 2013

WHAT A WEEKEND! Massive thanks to the guys at Upfest for letting me take over one of their boards - my Upfest/street art virginity is officially broken! It's been an epic, paint-fuelled, sun-soaked 2 days, and it's amazing to be part of such a huge number of talented artists who come from all over to take part in the festival and turn Bristol's streets into a living, breathing outdoor gallery. I had a lot of fun experimenting and trying out new stuff like spray cans and markers, which was pretty exciting. I must admit though, it was slightly nerve-racking laying down a great big picture of my face! What was I thinking?! Thanks to all those who came with their support and a beer!

The Memory Dealer

Mayfest is coming! It's nearly time again for Bristol's annual celebration of contemporary theatre. And making its Bristol debut as one of this years' events is the show which I have spent the last few months working on the installation and set design for; 'The Memory Dealer', directed by the brilliant Rik Lander. The show will be running the weekend of 24th-26th May - if you're in the city, come lose yourself in the mem-head subculture that is taking over the city's underground...

Tickets go on sale 22nd April and you can book them >here<

Here's a few behind the scenes photos to whet your appetite...

goodbye summer sun // new costume pieces!

amazing photos courtesy of joe-clarke.com

So, I've been up to a few things this summer...

As some may already know, when I'm not making things, drawing or writing, among other occupations I'm also a professional stilt walker. Which is why summer often finds me in a field, being a lot taller than usual and dressed as something ridiculous whilst surrounded by thousands of people.

First up on our festival circuit this year was Sunrise, which turned out to be the mud apocalypse so sadly no stilting there, but as my first muddy festival it was certainly... an experience. And I don't mean a bad one! Though bringing a pair of wellies might have helped me out a bit, rather than enduring the, erm, lovely damp feeling of trench foot in a pair of second hand walking boots I immediately spent a fiver on as soon as I slid my way on site. But trifles such as appropriate footwear and keeping vertical were no problem for these two legendary loons who showed everyone how it's supposed to be done:

Next, I was very excited to be at Secret Garden Party for the first time, which fully lived up to the hype. I was blown away by the sheer enormity of the creativity and effort that goes into making the site installations and the whole experience so special. Friday and Saturday were still no shows for us peg stilters, due to the lingering mud, but come Sunday the prevailing sunshine had given the ground a slightly firmer, yet rubber-like density, so it was off to join the New Orleans-stylee voodoo parade and finally have a stilt boogie.

Nozstock was a fun little adventure into the heart of Herefordshire with the Pariah Circus crew....a sweet, chilled out kind of festival, with a more family-orientated vibe...

....and after much anticipation, BOOMTOWN FAIR happened - the craziest, biggest, most upside-down inside-out festival I've experienced yet. My last time there was two years ago; unfortunately culminating in driving myself to hospital afterwards with chronic asthmatic problems (a long time coming really - don't smoke, kids! Assmar sucks!). Hence, I was really looking forward to being able to enjoy it this year. Finally, we were blessed with four days of beautiful sunshine too! And the cherry on top would probably have to be witnessing the fiery awesomeness of the three-legged arachnid Arcadia stage in action. The Arcadia crew put on the most incredible shows - if you get the chance to see one, don't miss it.

I was also excited to proudly unveil the new crow-inspired feather mohawk I made especially for the summer performances.
I love wearing this piece, it's big, showy and totally rockin!
More crow inspired-costume pieces to come.

by the way - I kicked ass at Stilt Pong, hosted by Kings of Ping. I think it's my new favourite game! Also, check out the bearded dude posing effortlessly in the background with a can of red stripe:

SEE NO EVIL 2012

My review of the recent graffiti/music spectacular that is SEE NO EVIL 2012 in Bristol is now available to read online at the Fear of Fiction website, feat. My Bad Sister, Arsequake, Prince Fatty and Buggsy.
What an amazing event; showcasing such a wide range of homegrown talent and cramming it all into one massive street party! It's a great example of one of the many creative happenings and forward community thinking in Bristol that make me very proud to be a south west girl. Yes indeed.

Pride Bristol

From the darkened room of my studio where I am tinkering (on a current super secret film project ssh), I stepped out on my stilts into the sunshine and rainbows of the Pride Bristol festival! Great crowd, good times.

The Birthday of the Infanta

Last autumn I was invited by the lovely director Emily Gray of Trestle Theatre Company to their arts base in London to discuss my ideas and inspiration for a stage adaptation of Oscar Wilde's The Birthday of the Infanta, after having spent three months earlier on in the year developing my take on the bittersweet fairy tale.
Watching the one-woman whirlwind that is actress Georgina Roberts in rehearsals, I could tell this was going to be an exciting show to witness. Georgina is a superb mistress of transformation, moving from her portrayal of each character to the next with such ease and imagination that makes her performance an absolute delight to behold.

Trestle Company's 'The Birthday of the Infanta' is now touring at various venues throughout London, Bath and others from the beginning of March right up until May. You can book tickets here

The Goblin King's Court of Disorder

photos courtesy of Joe Clarke and Marcus T

I love traveling to ye olde London towne. Especially when I'm not the one driving. And especially when it's to perform at a rather exciting new Guerilla Zoo event in the great big caverns underneath ye olde London Bridge - The Goblin King's Court of Disorder!

In between romping around the underground like a giant pixie on my stilts, I was fortunate to make friends with some beautiful creatures.

Highlight of my evening? Having a chat backstage with the enchanted legendary artist himself, Brian Froud! An absolute gentleman, he came all the way from the south coast to give a guest appearance and delighted us all with his tales of how the Dark Crystal and Labyrinth came into being. His son Toby, of course, played the baby that David Bowie kidnaps in Labyrinth. He's a puppet maker and stilt walker too don'cha know?

Carnyville Foolery

photos courtesy of the Invisible PhotoBooth

Last weekend I had the awesome pleasure of performing with my fellow fools and circus freaks in the amazing Invisible Circus show Carnyville. The show spans three nights and takes place at the abandoned but now reclaimed Bridewell Island, the former police and fire station serving as an ironically apt location for a show so riotous and anarchic in nature. It was a great success, with the costumed crowds lining the street outside each night buzzing with excited anticipation for the opening of the gates, ready to become completely immersed in the pandemonium. There is so much beautiful, dazzling chaos once you step inside, it really is hard to believe your eyes. The astounding number of performances and interactive sensory delights on offer ensures that no person leaves with the same experience as another, if you can find your way out that is...

Carnyville brings together so many shining individuals and the sheer volume of hard work, determination and creativity that brings the show to life is a true inspiration.
